Mold is a type of fungus. It occurs naturally in the environment. It spreads by means of microscopic spores borne on the wind, and is found everywhere life can be supported. Mold requires certain conditions in order to grow. First, it must have an organic food source, such as drywall, wallpaper paste, or soils that are embedded into carpets or upholstery just to name off a few of them. Also, mold growth requires a temperate climate and it likes stagnant air. The best growth occurs at temperatures between 65F and 85F. Finally, mold growth requires moisture. By minimizing moisture, you can reduce or eliminate mold growth. Moisture in a home, office or building can have many causes. Spills, leaks, overflows, condensation, and high humidity are common sources. Good maintenance practices are essential in the effort to prevent or eliminate mold growth. If moisture is allowed to remain on the growth medium, mold can develop within 48 to 72 hours.
